Analogue crossovers create certain levels of distortion. Passive parts in the signal path serve to create frequency colouration at best and phase distortion at their worst. These distortions are a limitation of their physics and are unavoidable with analogue crossovers. Enter the digital crossover. A digital crossover occurs before amplification. This means two great things. One, no frequency or phase distortion created by the crossover; and Two, each amplifier channel has to amplify only half of the signal. Yes, I’m saying each amplifier channel has to amplify only half of the 99dB sensitivity 16ohm channel. That’s a pretty easy load. Speaking of load, the amplifier sees the exact impedance curve of the driver itself, which provides a much more consistent load without the amplifier having to fight with the power loss caused by passive parts.

Amplification in the digital domain is the way of the future. By skipping the analogue stage, we remove over 1000 parts from the signal path, several steps of jitter-inducing conversion, and vast levels of amplitude distortion. This results in a shallow distortion system that is as simple as plug and play.

The Drivers: The Field Coil Experience

We’ve heard great speakers made with neodymium, AlNiCo, and ferrite magnets, but the most highly regarded speakers of all time have either been horns (ALE and GOTO) or Field Coil-based drivers. The downside of a horn is that it lacks bandwidth, which means you need multiple drivers with large horns handling different portions of the frequency response. This creates huge complications in terms of driver integration, which is nearly impossible given the distances between the drivers.

A Field Coil magnet is an electromagnet. This means we have two of our NanoXPPS power supplies per channel generating the magnetic force of the attraction. Unlike a permanent magnet, the field coil can be tuned to the speaker on the fly and makes a tremendous impact on the overall sound of the system. That means the quality of the power supply is hugely important in the field coil’s ability to control a speaker.

A permanent magnet (“normal”) speaker has a fixed magnetic field created by a magnet. The voice coil is suspended in a gap between the poles of the attraction. The voltage applied to the voice coil causes it to move in and out, which is mechanically coupled to the cone and causes it to move in and out. A field coil speaker uses two coils. The voice coil as described above and a field coil. DC voltage is applied to the field coil creating a magnetic field. This takes the place of the permanent magnet in creating the fixed magnetic field. Our drivers are hand made on a per order basis. Each voice coil has thousands of turns of pure silver wiring, and the drivers are meticulously crafted and assembled for us over six weeks. They are worth the wait for a truly unique and ultra-high-performance experience that cannot be beaten at any price.
